Orioles vs. Blue Jays Series Preview: Baltimore Heads North for Key AL East Showdown

The Baltimore Orioles head to Toronto this weekend for a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays in what feels like an early June measuring-stick series. Both clubs enter Friday night with identical 30-33 records and sit eight games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays. The season series is tied 2-2, making this weekend an important opportunity to gain ground within the AL East.

Series Schedule & Probable Pitching Matchups

Game 1 – Friday, June 5

Baltimore Orioles: Brandon Young (3-1, 3.35 ERA)
Toronto Blue Jays: Trey Yesavage (2-2, 2.19 ERA)

This is the most intriguing matchup of the series. Young has quietly become one of Baltimore’s most reliable starters, posting a 3.35 ERA across 43 innings. Meanwhile, rookie Trey Yesavage has been outstanding for Toronto with a 2.19 ERA and has not allowed a home run all season.

Edge: Slight Toronto advantage.

Game 2 – Saturday, June 6

Baltimore Orioles: Kyle Bradish (3-6, 3.44 ERA)
Toronto Blue Jays: TBD

Kyle Bradish continues to pitch better than his win-loss record suggests. His 65 strikeouts lead Baltimore’s rotation and he has consistently kept the Orioles in games despite limited run support. Toronto has not yet announced a starter.

Edge: Baltimore.

Game 3 – Sunday, June 7

Baltimore Orioles: Shane Baz (3-5, 4.29 ERA)
Toronto Blue Jays: Kevin Gausman (4-4, 3.36 ERA)

Former Oriole nemesis Kevin Gausman gets the ball in the finale. Shane Baz has flashed dominance at times but has struggled with consistency. This game could easily decide the series.

Edge: Toronto.

Orioles Players Who Are Hot

Pete Alonso

Pete Alonso continues to provide the power Baltimore signed him for during the offseason. His recent home runs against Boston helped fuel Baltimore’s series win at Fenway Park and he remains the club’s most dangerous middle-of-the-order bat.

Coby Mayo

Coby Mayo is playing with confidence right now. The rookie slugger has been driving the ball to all fields and has looked increasingly comfortable defensively at third base. Baltimore’s offense looks much deeper when Mayo is producing.

Shane Baz

Even though he won’t pitch until Sunday, Baz’s recent starts have shown improved command. When his fastball-slider combination is working, he has ace-level stuff.

Gunnar Henderson

Despite a lower batting average than Orioles fans expect, Henderson still leads Baltimore with 13 home runs entering the series and remains the centerpiece of the offense.

Blue Jays Players to Watch

Kevin Gausman

The veteran right-hander remains Toronto’s most dependable starter. Baltimore hitters know him well from his years in the AL East.

Kazuma Okamoto

Toronto’s third baseman enters the series tied with Henderson at 13 home runs and leads the Blue Jays offense.

Nathan Lukes

Lukes enters the series riding an 11-game hitting streak and has become one of Toronto’s hottest bats.

Myles Straw

After struggling recently, Straw broke out against Atlanta with three RBIs in Toronto’s 7-2 victory Thursday and could carry momentum into the series.

Runs Scored288257
Home Runs7059
Team AVG.240.247
Team ERA4.613.93
Strikeouts (Pitching)496554

The Orioles have been the better power-hitting team and score more runs overall. Toronto owns the advantage on the mound, with a lower team ERA and more strikeouts. Baltimore’s offense versus Toronto’s pitching could determine the series.

Keys for Baltimore

  1. Continue getting production from Pete Alonso and Coby Mayo.
  2. Get quality starts from Brandon Young and Kyle Bradish.
  3. Avoid falling behind early against Toronto’s strong pitching staff.
  4. Take advantage of a Blue Jays offense that has struggled for consistency.
  5. Win the middle game and put pressure on Toronto before facing Gausman on Sunday.

Prediction

This looks like an extremely even matchup. Both teams enter at 30-33, both are trying to climb back into the AL East race, and both desperately need a strong June. Toronto’s starting pitching gives them a slight edge, but Baltimore’s lineup has been hotter recently following the successful Boston series.

Prediction: Orioles take 2 of 3.

  • Friday: Blue Jays 4, Orioles 3
  • Saturday: Orioles 6, Blue Jays 2
  • Sunday: Orioles 5, Blue Jays 4

If Coby Mayo and Pete Alonso stay hot, Baltimore has a chance to leave Rogers Centre with another important AL East series victory.
