Towson Gymnastics Quietly Building One of Maryland’s Best College Sports Programs

Most Maryland sports fans recognize Maryland Terrapins gymnastics because of Big Ten exposure and NCAA regional appearances.

Far fewer realize another Maryland gymnastics program has quietly become one of the East Coast’s most consistent winners.

Towson Tigers women’s gymnastics continues building one of the strongest mid-major programs in the country while receiving only a fraction of the statewide attention devoted to football, basketball and lacrosse.

The Tigers captured the 2026 East Atlantic Gymnastics League championship with a season-high 196.375 score and earned six NCAA Regional individual qualifiers.

That success did not happen overnight.

Towson has now won three EAGL championships in the past four seasons and previously earned four consecutive NCAA Tournament team appearances from 2021 through 2024.

Despite that sustained success, Maryland sports coverage rarely focuses on the program outside postseason headlines.

Towson Keeps Winning Against Bigger Athletic Programs

Towson’s gymnastics rise becomes even more impressive when compared against the programs the Tigers regularly compete against.

The Tigers routinely face Power Four schools with larger budgets, bigger recruiting departments and far greater national visibility.

During the 2026 season, Towson competed against programs including:

  • Arizona
  • Clemson
  • Maryland
  • Pittsburgh
  • NC State
  • West Virginia
  • George Washington

The Tigers consistently remained competitive throughout the schedule.

Towson also finished 41st nationally in the Road to Nationals rankings after the 2026 season.

That national consistency has helped elevate the program into one of the strongest gymnastics brands outside the power conferences.

Isabella Minervini Became One of the Nation’s Best Gymnasts

Senior gymnast Isabella Minervini helped lead Towson’s breakout 2026 season.

Minervini earned 2026 EAGL Gymnast of the Year honors and qualified for NCAA Regionals as an all-around competitor after posting a 39.290 national qualifying score.

The Florida native also ranked 14th nationally on bars with a 9.930 score and earned WCGA Second Team All-America honors.

Towson’s ability to develop nationally respected gymnasts has become one of the program’s defining traits.

The Tigers consistently produce elite technical routines despite recruiting against schools with far larger NIL and scholarship resources.

Six Tigers Reached NCAA Regionals

Towson sent six gymnasts to the 2026 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional as individual qualifiers.

That achievement reinforced how deep the roster had become.

While Towson narrowly missed qualifying as a full team for regionals, the Tigers still placed numerous athletes into national postseason competition against SEC and Big Ten powers.

Programs like LSU, Florida and Alabama dominate national gymnastics headlines. Towson continues proving mid-major schools can still compete for respect nationally through strong coaching, culture and athlete development.

Recruiting Has Quietly Improved Every Year

Towson’s recruiting footprint continues expanding.

The Tigers now recruit nationally while also maintaining strong ties throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. The program attracts gymnasts looking for:

  • immediate competitive opportunities
  • strong team culture
  • consistent postseason contention
  • high-level coaching
  • balanced athletic and academic environments

Gymnastics recruiting differs significantly from major revenue sports.

Many athletes commit years earlier than basketball or football prospects. Relationships between families and coaching staffs often determine recruiting success as much as facilities or NIL support.

Towson’s stability continues helping the program compete in those recruiting battles.

Maryland Gymnastics Overall Continues Growing

The rise of Towson also reflects broader gymnastics growth throughout Maryland.

Maryland and Towson both reached NCAA Regionals in 2026, giving the state two nationally relevant programs simultaneously.

Club gymnastics participation across Maryland also continues increasing, especially in:

  • Baltimore County
  • Howard County
  • Anne Arundel County
  • Montgomery County

Younger athletes now see clearer pathways toward NCAA gymnastics opportunities without leaving the region.

That visibility matters.

Why Gymnastics Still Gets Overlooked

Gymnastics remains one of Maryland’s most undercovered college sports despite producing elite athletes and nationally competitive teams.

Several factors contribute:

  • limited television exposure
  • smaller media staffs
  • football and basketball dominance
  • Olympic-cycle attention spikes
  • lack of mainstream recruiting coverage

But gymnastics audiences continue growing nationally.

Social media has helped significantly expand visibility for routines, highlights and athlete personalities.

Programs like Towson increasingly benefit from that exposure.

Towson’s Culture Continues Driving Success

Towson’s consistency starts with culture.

The Tigers regularly emphasize:

  • accountability
  • technical precision
  • team-first mentality
  • leadership development
  • competitive depth

That environment has allowed Towson to sustain success even after graduating star athletes.

The program no longer depends on one breakout gymnast carrying the roster.

Towson now wins because of overall depth.
