2026 Chesapeake High School Girls Lacrosse Season Recap: Cougars Put Together Inspiring Playoff Run

The 2026 season proved to be one of perseverance, growth, and postseason success for the Chesapeake High School girls lacrosse team. Competing in one of Maryland’s toughest counties, the Cougars battled through a demanding regular-season schedule before putting together their best stretch of lacrosse when it mattered most. Chesapeake finished the year with a 7-7 record and advanced to the MPSSAA Class 3A regional championship game after winning three consecutive playoff contests. While the season ended one victory short of advancing further in the state tournament, the Cougars demonstrated remarkable improvement from opening day through the postseason and established a strong foundation for the future.
From the opening faceoff, Chesapeake knew every game would present a challenge. The Cougars opened the season against perennial power Mt. Hebron and dropped a 13-6 decision. Although the result was disappointing, the game provided an early measuring stick against one of Maryland’s premier public-school programs.
Rather than allowing that loss to define the season, Chesapeake responded immediately. The Cougars earned their first victory by defeating Southern 11-6 before adding convincing wins over Concordia Prep, 11-5, and Indian Creek, 15-6. Those early victories helped establish confidence while demonstrating the offensive potential that would become one of the team’s strengths throughout the spring.
As the calendar turned deeper into April, Chesapeake entered the heart of its Anne Arundel County schedule. Few leagues in Maryland offer as many elite opponents, and the Cougars faced that challenge head-on. Chesapeake battled River Hill, Annapolis, South River, Severna Park, and Broadneck—programs that consistently rank among the state’s best.
Although those games resulted in losses, they served a greater purpose. Chesapeake gained valuable experience against elite competition while continuing to improve each week. A narrow 12-10 loss to Annapolis showed the Cougars could compete with top-tier opponents, while games against South River, Severna Park, and Broadneck highlighted areas that continued to improve throughout the season.
The Cougars never lost confidence.
Instead, Chesapeake used those difficult matchups to sharpen every aspect of its game.
One of the season’s biggest highlights came in a dominant 19-1 victory over Meade. Chesapeake controlled possession from the opening draw and overwhelmed the Mustangs on both ends of the field. Shortly afterward, the Cougars earned another impressive county victory by defeating Crofton 12-9 in one of the team’s most complete performances of the regular season.
Victories over Old Mill also became a recurring theme. Chesapeake rolled to a 17-2 win during the regular season, showcasing its balanced offense and improving defense. By the end of April, the Cougars had proven they could score goals in bunches while continuing to develop defensively.
Throughout the regular season, Chesapeake’s offense consistently produced double-digit goal totals. The Cougars reached 10 or more goals in eight games, displaying depth throughout the lineup rather than relying on one player to carry the scoring load. While complete individual statistics were not publicly available, the balanced offensive attack became one of Chesapeake’s defining characteristics.
The regular season closed with a difficult matchup against Broadneck, but by that point the Cougars had already developed into a far different team than the one that opened the season. The experience gained against some of Maryland’s strongest opponents prepared Chesapeake perfectly for postseason play.
The playoffs quickly became the defining chapter of the season.
Opening the MPSSAA Class 3A tournament against Old Mill, Chesapeake immediately showed it had reached another level. The Cougars dominated every phase of the game in a convincing 16-4 victory, controlling draw controls, forcing turnovers, and capitalizing on offensive opportunities.
The momentum continued in the second round.
Facing Poly, Chesapeake once again delivered a complete team performance, earning a decisive 15-6 victory. The offense attacked from multiple angles while the defense limited quality scoring opportunities throughout the afternoon. Confidence continued to build as the Cougars advanced deeper into the postseason.
The regional semifinal against Severn Run became Chesapeake’s signature victory of 2026.
Playing one of its best games of the year, the Cougars overwhelmed Severn Run 13-2. Chesapeake’s defense produced arguably its finest effort of the season, frustrating the opposition from start to finish while the offense efficiently converted scoring chances. The impressive victory sent Chesapeake to the MPSSAA Class 3A regional championship game and marked one of the program’s biggest postseason accomplishments in recent years.
Standing between the Cougars and a trip further into the state tournament was Westminster.
The Owls entered the contest as one of Class 3A’s strongest programs and ultimately earned a 15-6 victory. Westminster’s experience and depth proved difficult to overcome, bringing Chesapeake’s memorable postseason run to an end.
Although the season concluded with that loss, it did little to diminish everything the Cougars accomplished.
A team that entered the postseason with a .500 record won three consecutive playoff games by a combined 44-12 margin before falling one step short of advancing further in the state tournament. That dramatic improvement reflected months of hard work, player development, and experience gained through one of Maryland’s most difficult regular-season schedules.
Several themes defined Chesapeake’s 2026 campaign.
First was resilience.
The Cougars consistently responded to adversity throughout the season. Early losses never carried over into the next game, and each challenge became another opportunity to improve. That mental toughness became especially evident during the postseason.
Second was offensive balance.
Chesapeake consistently generated scoring opportunities from multiple players, making it difficult for opponents to focus on stopping any one offensive threat. The Cougars reached double-digit goals in numerous contests and demonstrated the ability to score both in settled offensive possessions and transition opportunities.
Finally, the defense experienced tremendous growth.
While Chesapeake surrendered double-digit goals against several elite regular-season opponents, the defensive unit steadily improved throughout the spring. During the first three playoff games, the Cougars allowed just 12 combined goals, illustrating how much progress had been made by season’s end.
Although publicly available individual statistics were limited, the season ultimately became a testament to complete team play. Every player contributed throughout the lineup, creating a balanced roster capable of making a deep postseason run.
When the final whistle sounded on the 2026 campaign, Chesapeake had established itself as a dangerous postseason team and demonstrated that its future remains bright. The Cougars gained valuable playoff experience, proved they could compete with quality opponents, and laid the groundwork for continued success in 2027.
The final record may read 7-7, but it tells only part of the story. Chesapeake’s season will be remembered for its resilience, steady improvement, and a memorable postseason run that carried the Cougars all the way to the MPSSAA Class 3A regional championship game. For a team that continued getting better every week, the 2026 season represented an important step forward and provided plenty of optimism for the years ahead.
