Prospect Profile: Jesus Liranzo

Number 26 on the top 30 prospects list for the Baltimore Orioles is Jesus Liranzo. He comes in ahead of number 27 Pedro Araujo

Liranzo is a 23 year old right handed pitcher out of the Dominican Republic. He was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves in 2012. He was released a year later and signed by the Orioles.

He spent 2012-2015 in the Dominican Summer League, but did not pitch in 2014 due to an elbow injury. Liranzo carried a 4.15 ERA in 52 innings of work in the DSL.

His first season in the United States was spent across low A and double A. He played 16 games in low A with the Delmarva Shorebirds. He pitched 34.1 innings out of the bullpen, and had an ERA of 1.31 striking out 46 and walking 15.

He was then promoted to the Bowie Baysox where he pitched in 11 games. In 18.2 inning in Bowie, Liranzo had an ERA of 3.38 and struck out 20 while walking 12.

Liranzo spent the entire 2017 season in Bowie. He pitched in 31 games making 12 starts. In 65 innings of work last season, he had an ERA of 4.85 striking out 75 and walking 43.

Liranzo’s control is well below average, especially when it comes to his fastball, and he’ll need to issue significantly fewer free passes to be successful at higher levels. With improvement on that front, Liranzo could emerge as a high-leverage reliever.
