Orioles to hire Don Long as hitting coach

Don Long, former hitting coach with the Cincinnati Reds, will serve in the same capacity with the Baltimore Orioles in 2019.

Long had spent the last five seasons as the Reds hitting coach but was replaced by Turner Ward in November. Under Long’s guidance, the Reds finished last season 18th in runs, but finished in the top-10 in walk rate.

Long will replace Scott Coolbaugh who served as Baltimore’s hitting coach for the last four seasons, and who is now in the Dodgers organization.

The hiring of Long is another step in new manager Brandon Hyde’s task of rounding out his coaching staff.
