Nats Beat Marlins For Second Consecutive Win

The Nats took the first of a three game series with the Marlins with a final score of 8-2. Max Scherzer got the win, his 16th of the season. The loss was credited to Marlins’ starter Dan Straily, his 6th of the season. With this win, the Nats are now 62-61, and are 7.5 games back in the NL East.

Ryan Zimmerman started the scoring in the second inning when he homered on a fly ball to center field, making it 1-0 on his tenth homer of the season. In the bottom of the third inning, Bryce Harper hit an RBI single that scored Adam Eaton, making it 2-0. The Nats would score two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Matt Wieters, his 5th of the season, and on an RBI single by Eaton that scored Scherzer. In the next inning, Anthony Rendon hit a sacrifice fly that scored Harper making it 5-0 Nationals. The Marlins got their only two runs in the top of the sixth inning. The first was on a solo home run hit by Austin Dean, which was his first career MLB home run. The second was an RBI single hit by Miguel Rojas that scored in J.T. Riddle. The last three Nats’ runs were all scored in the bottom of the seventh inning. It started with another RBI single for Harper which scored Eaton. The second run was also an RBI single that also sent Rendon to second on a throwing error by Marlins OF Rafael Ortega. This got in Harper. The final run was scored on a single hit by Juan Soto that scored Rendon.

Tomorrow’s game is at 7:05 at Nationals Park. The starting pitching matchup will be Wei-Yin Chen for the Marlins and Tommy Milone for the Nationals.
