Martell Webster out 3-5 Months after Back Surgery
The Washington Wizards announced today, June 27th, that Shooting Guard / Small Forward Martell Webster had a successful microdisectomy surgery yesterday. He needed the surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back. Of course this announcement comes one day after the 2014 NBA draft that saw the Wizards trade away their only draft pick.
The Wizards expect Webster to be able to begin his rehab process right away and should not be able to resume basketball activity at least for another 3-5 months. Webster suffered the injury during a workout at the Wizards practice complex earlier in the week.
The eight year veteran will start his second year of a four year contract next season and will make $5,150,000 in that season being the highest paid bench player on the roster. However Webster could be moved into the starting five as the future of free agent Trevor Ariza still is up in the air.
Webster took a step back last season as his points per game dropped from 11.4 to 9.7 and his ever so deadly 3 point percentage dropped as well from .422 to .392. Webster was one of the many disappointments in the Indiana series as he averaged a dismal 3.0 PPG and only shot .100% from beyond the arc.
With Webster missing 3-5 months of the offseason not to mention some early games in the regular season look for the Wizards to really push to resign Trevor Ariza along with hopefully allow Otto Porter Jr to fully develop into the player the Wizards hoped he could be when they selected him with the 3rd overall pick last season.
