Luis Ortiz makes 2019 debut, Orioles drop game one against Red Sox 13-2: Recap 6/14/19

The Orioles began a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on the wrong foot.

Trey Mancini got started early tonight, but unfortunately that is all the Orioles would get. Mancini blasted his 15th home run off former Orioles pitching prospect Eduardo Rodriguez in the first. This put the Birds out in front 1-0.

Orioles pitching prospect Luis Ortiz was called up earlier today, and he started his first game of 2019 tonight. Ortiz pitched 3.1 innings and got a dose of the big leagues quickly.

Ortiz would give up his first home run in the second, a two-run shot that put the Red Sox ahead 2-1.

In the fourth inning, Ortiz would give up one more solo home run before he was pulled. Ortiz ended his 2019 debut at 3.1 IP, allowing four runs off four hits and walking five. Things can only go up from here.

Dan Straily came in relief with one out in the fourth, and would give up three more runs that allowed the Red Sox extend their lead to 6-1.

In the fifth inning, the home run parade would continue, as Straily let up three more long balls, resulting in a five-run inning. This put the Red Sox up 11-1 after five.

Josh Rogers would allow two more runs in the sixth off an Andrew Benintendi single, further extending the Red Sox lead to 13-1.

The deflated O’s would get one run back in the ninth, a RBI single off the bat of center fielder Keon Broxton.

The Red Sox would take game one 13-2. Luis Ortiz would take the loss in his spot-start.

Our MSB Orioles Player of the Game is “Ol’ Reliable,” Trey Mancini. Mancini went 2-for-4, knocking in one of the Oriole runs and scoring the other.

The Orioles host game two Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
