Orioles beat Blue Jays 2-1: 4/2/19 game recap

Andrew Cashner took the mound tonight, looking to bounce back from his dismal start on Opening Day last Thursday and bounce back is exactly what he did.

Andrew Cashner was lights out all night and had the Toronto Blue Jays hitters looking puzzled. Cashner completed 6 innings, giving up only 4 hits accompanied by 3 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Both offenses were quiet for the first part of the game, until finally in the top of the sixth, Jonathan Villar tripled, scoring Dwight Smith Jr. to take a 1-0 lead.

Following Villar’s RBI, Trey Mancini added yet another RBI of his own, scoring Villar on a single.

Trey Mancini is on fire. He has hit in all 5 games thus far, knocking in 5 RBIs off of 9 hits. To add to that, Mancini has had back-to-back multi-hit games and homered in back-to-back games before tonight.

Baltimore Orioles youngster, Paul Fry, would come in to pitch to start the seventh inning in relief of Cashner. Fry would be lights out through two innings, allowing only one hit and no runs to hold the Orioles lead at 2-0.

Going into the bottom of the ninth, Miguel Castro would come on for the save opportunity. Castro would be the fourth different closer used by manager Brandon Hyde in four straight games. Things would get a little interesting yet again in the final frame. Rowdy Tellez hit a solo homerun for the Blue Jays to cut the Orioles lead to 2-1.

After the homerun, Miguel Castro was not having any of it, forcing a groundout to third then the final out a pop fly to left field.

Andrew Cashner picked up the win (1-1) and Miguel Castro recorded the save (1). The Orioles have now won their first two series, both on the road, to open this young season.

The Orioles take on the Blue Jays for game 3 on Wednesday afternoon at 4:07 PM.
