Virginia outlasts Maryland to win National Championship

In a game filled with body blows Virginia scoring 5 straight to go up 16-11 with 11:04 left was the biggest one. Maryland cut it to 17-16 on a goal by Anthony DeMaio with 11 seconds left. They won the ensuing faceoff and but the shot by Luke Wierman was saved by goalie Alex Rode and Virginia held on to win by that 17-16 score.

Jared Bernhardt finished with 2 goals and 3 assists but was held to one assist in the second half. Logan Wisnaukas added five goals and one assist. Anthony DeMaio and Daniel Maltz had two goals each. UVA won the faceoff battle 21-16 but the Terps got possession on several of the of the Cavalier wins by getting the ground ball. They won that battle 41-36.

Connor Shellenberger continued his coming out party. The redshirt freshman had 4 goals and 2 assists for Virginia. Two of those came in the 5-0 run. Matt Moore matched the 4 and 2 while Jeff Conner added a hat trick. The goalies were also a difference in this game. Logan McNaney had 17 saves for Maryland but he struggled during a couple stretches. Alex Rode finished with 16 saves for UVA including a couple on Bernhardt and the one at the end of the game.

What a weekend of lacrosse it was and this game was the perfect way to end it.
