Strasburg to the DL; Tommy Milone Promoted
Washington Nationals’ pitcher Stephen Strasburg has been scratched from tonight’s start against the Miami Marlins. He has been placed on the 10-day DL, retroactive to 7/22, with a pinched nerve in his neck.
Left-hander Tommy Milone will pitch in Strasburg’s place tonight after being promoted from Triple-A Syracuse.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Milone, infielder Jose Marmolejos was designated for assignment.
Strasburg had just returned from an extended stay on the DL for inflammation in his right shoulder. His return outing was poor, leading some to speculate he still wasn’t 100-percent. Strasburg is 6-7 this year with a 3.90 ERA in 14 starts.
Originally drafted by the Nationals in 2008, Tommy Milone made five starts for Washington in 2011 before being traded to Oakland that year. The 31-year old is a veteran having made 126 starts in the majors with a 45-36 record and a career 4.37 ERA.
Milone signed with the Nationals last season as a free agent.
In his 20 starts this year with Syracuse, Milone has a 7-4 record with a 4.19 ERA and has averaged 9.3 K’s per nine innings. His last four starts have been impressive, posting a 1.50 ERA with opponents batting only .155 against him.
