Recap: Nationals Stay Undefeated in Spring Training with win over Cardinals 12-2

The Washington Nationals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 12-2 on February 24th, 2019 at Roger Dean Stadium. With the win, Washington remains undefeated in Spring play, having a 2-0 win-loss record. St. Louis drops to 1-1 in the loss in Grapefruit league play. Washington starter Erick Fedde was awarded with the win, pitching two scoreless innings by just allowing one hit, along with striking out three batters. As for the Cardinals, Michael Wacha was given the loss, as he let up one run and one walk in just two innings of action.

To summarize, the Nationals opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd when shortstop Adrian Sanchez grounded out for a sacrifice, where Victor Robles scored to give the road team a 1-0 lead. Washington would then score three runs in the top of the 3rd off a wild pitch by St. Louis hurler Daniel Ponce de Leon, Matt Adams hitting a sacrifice fly to score Trea Turner, and Victor Robles smacked a ball which turned out to be another sacrifice fly, and it would lead to Adam Eaton scoring. Moments later, the Cardinals answered back with a Tyler O’Neill solo home run in the bottom of the 4th, and Edmundo Sosa scoring off a groundball in the bottom of the 5th. Despite St. Louis’ attempt at making a comeback, Washington would then go on to score eight unanswered runs to close out the game, and ultimately dominant in a 12-2 win.

Next, the Nats will travel to Champion Stadium to take on the Atlanta Braves on February 25th, 2019. Newly signed pitcher, Patrick Corbin, will make his Spring debut as he faces off against Max Fried. On the other hand, the Cardinals will stay home at Roger Dean Stadium to take on the Detroit Tigers on February 25th, 2019. Lastly, Washington look to develop their young prospects in Victor Robles and Carter Kieboom through this Spring, and will likely give veteran second baseman Brian Dozier a substantial amount of playing time to adjust to his new role with the Nats.
