Recap: Capitals Fall Flat in 4-1 Loss to Blues

The Washington Capitals were defeated by the St. Louis Blues by a score of 4-1 on January 14th, 2019. The Capitals lone goal was scored by left winger and captain, Alex Ovechkin, and it was a slap shot assisted by Dmitri Orlov(11th assist of the season) and Travis Boyd(9th assist of the season) with 12:10 remaining in the 1st period. Statistically, Pheonix Copley of Washington would go on to make 33 saves, but it would simply not be enough as St. Louis caught fire early in the 2nd period.

Now, the Capitals stand at 27-13-5, and hold first place in the Metropolitan division. On the other side, the Blues move up to 20-20-4, and are three points away from the 2nd wild card spot.

To summarize, with 12:10 remaining in the first period, left winger Alex Ovechkin hit a slapshot to give Washington an early 1-0 lead, and it accounted for his 33rd goal of the season, as mentioned earlier. Later, with 16:42 remaining in the 2nd period, Ivan Barbashev of the Blues, hit an unassisted, wrist shot goal to tie the game at 1-1. Moments later, Vince Dunn contributed to the scoring parade for the Blues with a wrist shot with 14:49 remaining in the 2nd period. David Perron would cap off a three goal scoring parade with a backhand shot to give the Blues a 3-1 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the 2nd period. In close to five minutes, St. Louis recorded three goals over Washington goaltender Pheonix Copley, which would ultimately give them the win. Not to mention, Vladimir Tarasenko would extend the Blues lead with a wrist shot on the power play with 11:36 remaining in the third period, and that would give the Blues the 4-1 victory.

Despite losing, the Capitals congratulated and were honored to have defender, Brooks Orpik play his 1000th NHL game, and his 297th with Washington. The Capitals will now travel to Nashville to take on the Predators on January 15th, 2019 at the Bridgestone Arena.
