Ravens Sign Free Agent Receiver, Agholor
Ravens GM Eric DeCosta vowed to overhaul the Ravens wide receiver room this off season, and he took the first step in doing so on Friday. The Ravens signed veteran receiver Nelson Agholor to a one-year $3.25 million deal, with another $3 million available through incentives. Agholor is the first outside free agent the Ravens have signed this offseason.
Agholor, 29, has had disappointing NFL career thus far, after being taken with the 20th overall selection by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2015 draft. Seen as a top receiver coming out of USC, Agholor has struggled to translate his talents to the NFL level.
In five seasons with the Eagles, Agholor never caught more then 65 passes and never had more than 768 receiving yards. Agholor however was a key part in the Eagles Super Bowl LII victory over the Patriots in 2017 catching nine passes for 84 yards in the Eagles 41-33 win and the Eagles first Super Bowl victory.
Agholor joined the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2020 season and had his best season as a pro. In 15 games Agholor had 48 recpetions for 896 yards and eight touchdowns.
Agholor was not retained by the Raiders for the 2021 season as he signed a two-year $26 million deal with the New England Patriots. His time in New England showed similar results as he never had more then 37 receptions and no more than 473 yards in a season during his two seasons with the Patriots.
Agholor joins a Ravens team in turmoil as they continue to navigate the Lamar Jackson contract saga. While Agholor isn’t the big name receiver many Ravens fans are hoping for, Agholor has speed and the ability to stretch the field vertically from the outside, something this current Ravens receiving core desperately lacks.
Even with the unknown surrounding if Lamar Jackson will be back with the Ravens in 2023, Eric DeCosta and the Ravens must continue to add to this Ravens passing offense both in free agency and through next months NFL draft.
