Orioles vs. Blue Jays Series Preview: Baltimore Looks to Keep Rolling

Orioles vs. Blue Jays Series Preview

The Baltimore Orioles finally carry momentum into a big American League East matchup.

After sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays in dominant fashion, the Orioles return to Camden Yards for a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Baltimore suddenly looks energized again after weeks of inconsistency. Gunnar Henderson broke out with a massive series against Tampa Bay, Adley Rutschman continues to string together quality at-bats, and Colton Cowser has caught fire at exactly the right time.

Toronto enters the series searching for consistency. Injuries continue to hurt the Blue Jays rotation, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. still looks stuck in an uneven offensive stretch. George Springer and Daulton Varsho continue producing, but Toronto needs more offensive depth if the club wants to keep pace in the AL East race.

Baltimore enters the series with confidence after outscoring Tampa Bay 26-8 during the three-game sweep. The Orioles suddenly look like a completely different team offensively.

Projected Pitching Matchups

Game 1: Chris Bassitt vs. Patrick Corbin

Baltimore hands the ball to veteran right-hander Chris Bassitt in the opener. Bassitt needs a bounce-back performance after a rough recent stretch. The veteran still attacks hitters effectively when he commands the sinker and cutter early in counts.

Toronto counters with former Oriole Patrick Corbin. Corbin no longer overpowers hitters, but the veteran left-hander continues mixing pitches well enough to stay competitive. Baltimore’s right-handed bats need to attack early fastballs instead of letting Corbin settle into favorable counts.

Game 2: Trevor Rogers vs. TBD

Trevor Rogers gets another opportunity to prove himself in Baltimore’s rotation. Rogers still flashes swing-and-miss stuff, especially with the changeup, but command issues continue creating trouble in big innings.

Toronto has not finalized the Game 2 starter.

Game 3: Brandon Young vs. Trey Yesavage

This matchup could quietly become the best pitching duel of the series.

Baltimore rookie Brandon Young continues showing poise beyond his experience level, while Toronto prospect Trey Yesavage brings electric strikeout stuff to the mound. Baltimore hitters must stay patient because Yesavage can lose the strike zone when pitch counts climb.

Game 4: Kyle Bradish vs. TBD

Kyle Bradish closes the series for Baltimore. Bradish looked sharper during his last outing and continues building momentum after an inconsistent start to the season.

Baltimore desperately needs innings from Bradish because the bullpen handled heavy workloads throughout May.

Orioles Players Who Are Hot

Gunnar Henderson

Gunnar Henderson finally looks locked in again.

Two home runs against Tampa Bay highlighted one of Henderson’s best games of the season. Baltimore’s lineup becomes dangerous when Henderson attacks early in counts and drives fastballs with authority.

The Orioles need Henderson to continue setting the tone offensively against Toronto’s shaky rotation depth.

Colton Cowser

Colton Cowser completely changed the direction of his season over the last two weeks.

Back-to-back walk-off home runs earlier this week gave Cowser a massive confidence boost, and the swing suddenly looks much quicker through the zone. Earlier this month, Cowser chased pitches and struggled against velocity. During the Rays series, Cowser drove fastballs aggressively and used the entire field.

Over the last seven games, Cowser has looked like one of Baltimore’s most dangerous hitters.

Adley Rutschman

Adley Rutschman quietly pieced together one of his strongest offensive stretches of the year.

Rutschman consistently delivered quality at-bats against Tampa Bay and sprayed line drives to all fields. Baltimore’s offense becomes significantly deeper when Rutschman focuses on hard contact instead of trying to lift every pitch.

Blaze Alexander

Blaze Alexander erupted against the Rays with the best offensive game of his major league career.

Alexander delivered six RBI Wednesday night and continues giving Baltimore important lineup depth while several veterans still fight through inconsistency.

Orioles Players Who Are Cold

Tyler O’Neill

Tyler O’Neill still has not delivered the offensive production Baltimore expected.

Strikeouts continue piling up, and opposing pitchers keep attacking him with breaking balls away from the plate. The Orioles desperately need more middle-of-the-order power from O’Neill.

Blue Jays Players Who Are Hot

George Springer

George Springer looks rejuvenated entering the series.

Toronto’s veteran outfielder continues producing quality at-bats and driving the baseball with authority. Baltimore pitchers cannot allow Springer to settle into comfortable counts early in games.

Daulton Varsho

Daulton Varsho continues playing strong baseball on both sides of the field.

Varsho provides Toronto with power, speed, and elite outfield defense. Baltimore must limit opportunities for Varsho to create momentum offensively.

Ernie Clement

Ernie Clement quietly enters the series swinging one of Toronto’s hottest bats.

Clement continues frustrating opposing pitchers with contact hitting and disciplined at-bats.

Blue Jays Players Who Are Cold

Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. still has not looked like the dominant middle-of-the-order force Toronto expected this season.

The power remains dangerous, but the overall consistency continues disappearing for stretches. Baltimore pitchers must continue forcing Guerrero to chase pitches below the strike zone.

Biggest Key to the Series

Baltimore must continue carrying offensive momentum from the Rays sweep into this series.

The Orioles looked lifeless offensively earlier this month. That changed dramatically over the last week. Henderson looks dangerous again. Rutschman looks confident. Cowser suddenly looks like a major offensive threat once more.

If Baltimore continues attacking fastballs aggressively and controlling counts early, the Orioles have a real opportunity to win another division series at Camden Yards.

Prediction

Toronto still has enough veteran talent to make this series competitive, especially if Guerrero heats up. Still, Baltimore currently looks sharper offensively and far more energized overall.

Camden Yards should carry strong energy after the Rays sweep, and the Orioles finally appear to have momentum on their side.

Prediction: Orioles win the series 3-1.
