Orioles select shortstop Henderson and outfielder Stowers with remaining first day picks

After drafting Oregon State star catcher Adley Rutschman with the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, the Baltimore Orioles selected two more young men to lead the future of the organization.

With the 42nd pick of the draft, the Orioles selected Gunnar Henderson, a shortstop from John T. Morgan Academy in Alabama.

Henderson, 17, is committed to Auburn, but looks like he will sign with the organization sooner than later.

Henderson is a tall young man, checking in at 6-foot-3. He is said to be one of the better hitters in this year’s high school class.

Henderson produces a lot of hard contact from gap to gap. He is expected to gain more power as he gets older and builds up more muscle. Henderson is also looked at as a future third baseman rather than shortstop due to his size.

With the 71st pick of the draft, the Orioles selected Kyle Stowers, an outfielder from Stanford.

Stowers had a productive season for the Cardinal, batting an impressive .306/.370/.519 in 52 games.

Stowers appealed to many teams due to his big, aggressive swings. He has been plagued with the swing and miss, but looks like he can produce from his power. Stowers is also touted as a sneaky good defender in the outfield.

If signed, it looks as though Henderson will be assigned to Low Class-A Aberdeen, and Stowers will most likely report to Class-A Delmarva.

The Orioles next selection will be the number 79th pick and the number 108th pick. They will choose every 30 picks thereafter.

Stay tuned to MSB for more draft coverage, as round three begins today at 1:00 p.m. ET.
