Orioles Place Cedric Mullins on IL; Sign Aaron Hicks
In yesterday’s contest between the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Guardians, star center-fielder Cedric Mullins sustained a right groin strain on his way to first base. While the severity of the strain is still unknown, it appears significant enough to warrant time on the IL. Thus, this afternoon Mullins was placed on the 10-Day IL. In a corresponding move, the Orioles signed former Yankee Aaron Hicks.
The signing of Hicks is undoubtedly a move made out of desperation; while the O’s would likely have preferred to promote one of their many OF prospects, nearly all of them are battling injuries. Kyle Stowers, who’s seen time in the Majors this year, is sidelined with shoulder inflammation, highly-touted prospect Colton Cowser is dealing with a quad issue, and Hudson Haskin is recovering from a hamstring injury.
Aaron Hicks became available after the Yankees released him just four days ago;Hicks was in the midst of a woeful 2023 season, batting just .188/.263/.261. The 33-year-old will likely have a very limited role in his time with Baltimore, and a swift release upon the recuperation of one of the O’s other outfield options seems probable. The details of Hicks’ contract are unknown, but his salary will almost certainly be a negligible figure. The switch-hitter will wear no. 34, and will be available against Cleveland tonight.
