Orioles Acquire Cash Considerations in Return for Breyvic Valera

The Baltimore Orioles have traded utility-man Breyvic Valera to the San Francisco Giants for undisclosed cash considerations.

Valera, who was one of the five players acquired in Manny Machado trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers in July, was designated for assignment yesterday to correspond the Orioles waiver wire acquisition of Austin Brice from the Los Angeles Angels.

This was expected as versatility is a coveted trait in a player in today’s game, and any team was allowed to make a waiver claim, if they chose to do so. If gone unclaimed, Valera would have been outrighted to the Norfolk Tides, and removed from the 40 man roster.

The San Francisco Giants newly hired GM, Farnhan Zaidi (formerly General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers) was a key decision maker in the Dodgers daily baseball operations, and it is likely he was one of the deciding factors in the July Manny Machado trade, so Valera comes full circle back to Zaidi.

Breyvic Valera, the 26 year old, was the odd man out, after the Rule 5 acquisitions of Richie Martin and Drew Jackson, while already keeping Engelb Vielma, who is just a phone call away from the majors.

It is unknown to the public how much money the Orioles received back.
