No. 19 Maryland’s fourth-quarter surge interrupts Indiana’s senior night.
As the season winds down for No. 19 Maryland, these last two games, the Terrapins want to finish strong. That was the case on Thursday night as Maryland defeated Indiana 74-60. Thursday night was senior night for the Hoosiers, and three weeks ago, the Terrapins had their senior day and were spoiled by Illinois.
Short Handed? No Problem!
The Terrapins went into this game without Saylor Poffenbarger, which gave head coach Brenda Frese eight players at her disposal. Everyone contributed. For example, Amari DeBerry was impactful with her minutes and size on both sides of the ball. Another example was Christina Dalce, who seemed untouchable in the first quarter, scoring 7 points, with other contributions from Kubek and McLean, and 40 minutes of bench production. This is going to be key to going into the tournaments.
The Maryland Rebound!
From tipoff, it was clear that there were two basketball styles, and the Terps, if you look at most of the season, outrebounded their opponents. Maryland finished with 39 total rebounds compared to Indiana’s 24 rebounds. The Hoosiers had some foul trouble, and their half-court offense sometimes did not make good decisions with the ball. At times they fed Yarden Garzon and Sydney Parrish with three-point shooting, Garzon was ONE three-pointer short all-time for their program.
From the Second Quarter to the Fourth Quarter.
The Terps’ first ten minutes of the game were at times shaky, but they tied the game to end the quarter. As the second quarter progressed, the Terps did not look back; Maryland went on a 12-0 run. They also outscored Indiana by 10 points within the quarter. The statistics from both teams indicated how the remainder of the game would unfold. Maryland shot 57% from the field, while Indiana struggled with only 21% and had a disappointing performance from beyond the arc. Many have criticized Shyanne Sellers for “not being a leader,” but the soon-to-be WNBA prospect proved her critics wrong by stepping up in the fourth quarter. She scored 21 points, effectively closing out the game for the Terps..
Maryland returns home to Xfinity for the season finale Sunday as they seek revenge against Ohio State.
