Nationals-Marlins Recap 7/26/18

Final Score: 10-3 Washington

Series: 1-0 Washington

The game began with a barrage from Miami. The Marlins scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off of a J.T. Realmuto double, a sack fly from Justin Bour, and a single from Cameron Maybin. It took three innings for the Nats to get on the board, but they did it in typical fashion. Trea Turner hit a leadoff solo home run to start the inning. Juan Soto matched him with his own 4th inning solo homer. Going into the 6th inning the Marlins lead 3-2. That lead was not held for long as Ryan Zimmerman scored Eaton on a long double to left. Washington kept their foot on the gas in the 7th inning where they scored an additional three runs. A walk drawn by Difo and a Michael A. Taylor single gave the Nats two baserunners on with no outs. Trea Turner then pursued to hit a beautiful triple, scoring both in the process. Turner was granted the opportunity to go home after all his work as Bryce Harper (who had struck out in his first three at bats) hit a double to put the Nats up 6-3. In the top of the 9th Matt Wieters smashed a two-rbi double to put Washington ahead 8-3. In the following at-bat Wilmer Difo hit a triple into right-center putting the Nats up 9-3. The scoring did not stop there though. Michael A. Taylor doubled down the left field line which scored Difo from third for a seven run lead.

It was an interesting pitching matchup tonight between Tommy Malone for the Nationals and Dan Straily for the Marlins. Malone was recently brought up after Stephen Strasburg went on the 10-day DL. Malone ended the night with five innings pitched. He gave up three earned runs, eight hits, and struck out six batters. Straily pitched for 5 2/3 innings where he gave up five hits, three earned runs, and struck out six batters. Near identical starts between the two pitchers gave each ball club the opportunity to pull away. Justin Miller is credited with the win for tonight’s game.

Nationals batters finished with 13 hits and 6 strikeouts on the night. Marlins batters finished with 10 hits and 11 strikeouts

Across the board Nationals pitchers totaled 11 strikeouts, zero walks, and only allowed 3 earned runs. Marlins pitchers totaled 6 strikeouts, 9 walks, and gave up 10 earned runs.

Tomorrow’s pitching matchup will consist of Washington’s Max Scherzer (13-5) vs. Miami’s Pablo Lopez (2-1)
