Hood W-BB Team Opens Season Up With 77-64 Win Over St. Mary’s (MD)
SAINT MARY’S CITY, Md. – Sophomore F Mia Savoy had a career-high 25 points for Hood (17 of them in the fourth quarter alone) and the Blazers opened their season with a 77-64 victory over St. Mary’s (Maryland) Seahawks in the Dan Greene Memorial Invitational Friday night.
Sophomore G Maggie Tien added in 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Hood (1-0).
Senior G Kerri Kline led the Seahawks (0-2) with 20 points.
The Blazers had an anemic second quarter where they could only put seven points for those 10 minutes, but Hood still had a 25-24 halftime lead because St. Mary’s only had 14 points in the first and 10 more in the second.
Junior F Kobe Chaney would hit one of two free throws for the Seahawks to the score at 25-25 more than a minute into the third quarter. In a 40-second span between 8:14 left and 7:34 left, the Blazers went on a 7-0 run (equaling their total offense output of the second quarter) to grab a 32-25 lead.
After Tien drained a three with 3:47 left on the clock to make it 43-32, more than a minute would expire before a Seahawks lay-up by Junior G Katie Robey with 2:33 left cut the lead down to 43-34. Hood would only out-score St. Mary’s, 4-3 and it was 47-37 after three quarters.
Then both teams exploded in the fourth, though when St. Mary’s called for a time out after Olivia Nowlin’s lay-up with 6:47 left made it 56-46 Hood.
Savoy went on a scoring frenzy, scoring 15 of her points in the last six minutes, including seven in the last minute alone, as Hood & St. Mary’s combined for 57 points in the last 10 minutes (30 for Hood and 27 for St. Mary’s).
Hood plays Goucher Saturday at 1:00 PM and St. Mary’s plays Washington College after that game is concluded.
