D.C. United and NBC Sports Washington in talks for TV rights

With no local broadcast partner as of now and just weeks away from beginning the season, D.C. United and their fans are in a bit of a bind. After last year’s failed experiment of cord cutting FloFC’s streaming service didn’t work out the way the club had hoped. Due to fan complaints, technical difficulties, and the like, D.C. United ended their four year contract with FloFC hoping to find a resolution for their broadcasts.

Now there’s a report from Steven Goff of The Washington Post that the Black and Red could return to NBC Sports Washington. The two sides are in serious talks and those familiar with negotiations said the dialogue is ongoing and talks will continue.

A return to NBC Sports Washington would help both the soccer club and the network itself. Ratings were lower as a result of the streaming service last year so fans weren’t able to see some of Wayne Rooney’s highlight reel goals from his final season with United. It’ll also help NBCSW’s summer ratings with no Capitals or Wizards games taking place in those months.

During the search for a new broadcast partner, D.C. United also reached out to the Sinclair Broadcast Group (WJLA-7 and WJLA 24/7 News) as well as WTTG Fox 5.

With the season beginning on Saturday Feb. 29 at 1 p.m. against the Colorado Rapids, here’s hoping D.C. United finds a broadcast partner before opening week.
