Cowser’s Clutch Week Gives Orioles a Spark During Difficult Stretch
The Baltimore Orioles spent much of May searching for offense, consistency and momentum. Colton Cowser delivered all three with one swing after another this week.
Cowser crushed walk-off home runs in consecutive nights at Camden Yards, first against Detroit and then again Monday in a dramatic 13-inning victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The sudden power surge capped the hottest stretch of the season for the Orioles outfielder, whose early-season struggles raised questions about his role in Baltimore’s lineup.
Monday’s blast carried even more drama.
After the Orioles erased multiple deficits against Tampa Bay, Cowser launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning to secure a 9-7 victory. The homer marked Baltimore’s second straight walk-off win and gave Cowser one of the biggest moments of the Orioles’ season.
Less than 24 hours earlier, Cowser hammered a three-run shot off veteran closer Kenley Jansen to beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3. The homer traveled deep into the right-field seats and gave Baltimore its first walk-off victory of the season.
The timing could not have mattered more for the Orioles or for Cowser himself.
Baltimore entered the week stuck in another inconsistent stretch inside the American League East. Injuries, bullpen instability and uneven offensive production prevented the Orioles from building sustained momentum. Cowser mirrored many of those same issues during the opening weeks of the season.
After emerging as one of baseball’s best young outfielders in 2024 and battling injuries throughout 2025, expectations remained high entering this season. Instead, Cowser opened 2026 with inconsistent at-bats, limited power production and extended stretches of frustration at the plate. Strikeouts mounted early in the year while hard contact disappeared for stretches.
The Orioles never stopped believing the breakout version of Cowser would return.
This week finally looked like that player again.
Cowser attacked fastballs early in counts, drove pitches to all fields and looked far more comfortable in late-game situations. Confidence returned with every swing. Baltimore also trusted him in bigger offensive spots late in games, and Cowser rewarded that faith immediately.
Against Detroit on Sunday, the Orioles trailed entering the ninth inning before Cowser delivered the decisive swing against one of baseball’s most accomplished closers. The next night against Tampa Bay, Cowser once again waited for the game’s biggest moment and once again ended it himself.
The performance energized a clubhouse that desperately needed life.
Players stormed from the dugout after both home runs. Camden Yards erupted each night. Baltimore suddenly looked like a team capable of surviving adversity instead of collapsing under it.
Cowser’s recent stretch also revived memories of the player Baltimore expected when the organization selected him fifth overall in the 2021 MLB Draft.
The former Sam Houston State star climbed quickly through the Orioles’ farm system because of his advanced plate discipline, athleticism and power potential. Cowser finished near the top of American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2024 after establishing himself as a foundational piece for Baltimore’s future.
Injuries disrupted much of 2025 and slowed that momentum.
A thumb injury sidelined Cowser for a significant stretch last season, and consistency never fully returned afterward. The Orioles still believed the talent remained intact, but the first two months of 2026 created fresh concerns about when the breakout form would reappear.
This week reminded everyone why Baltimore never lost faith.
Cowser now owns two of the most memorable moments of the Orioles’ season. More importantly, the swings looked mechanically sound and emotionally confident. The Orioles need that version of Cowser if they hope to climb back into contention during the summer months.
Jackson Holliday continued delivering quality at-bats late in games, Leody Taveras added key offensive production, and Baltimore’s pitching staff survived extra-inning chaos long enough for Cowser to finish the job against Tampa Bay.
Still, the story belonged to Cowser.
Two nights. Two walk-off home runs. One dramatic reminder that baseball seasons can change quickly.
