Bowie Baysox Weekly Recap: 5/14 to 5/20

The Bowie Baysox start this week off 1 game below .500 with a 17-18 record and look to play above .500 and stay above .500 for the rest of the season. Here is a recap from each of the 7 games this week.

Game 1: 5/14(15)/18 Harrisburg 8 Bowie 2

The Baysox do not get a good start from Michael Kelly, who doesn’t even last a third of an inning. He goes 0 innings allowing 4 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks. Luis Ysla and John Means also come in to allow 2 runs each but in more innings of work. Luis Ysla comes in to limit the damage in he first three innings and John Means pitched the last 6 innings of the game on the next day due to rain. Walks were costly with the pitching staff walking 7 altogether. Cervenka and Santander, in his return to the minors, each got RBIs.

Game 2: 5/15(16)/18: Harrisburg 4 Bowie 5

On another rainy day the Baysox end up playing the same game on 2 different days as they did the day before. In this 7 inning game, Corban Joseph ended up being the difference, jacking a solo home run to win the game in the bottom of the 7th inning. Hunter Harvey went 4 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and 5 strikeouts. Ryan Mountcastle had a good day with 3 hits in 3 at bats and 2 RBIs. He is the player of the game.

Game 3: 5/16/18: Harrisburg 5 Bowie 2

Keegan Akin goes just 5.1 innings, allowing 4 earned runs, and 4 strikeouts. It ruins his run of impressive starts the last few times he’s been on the mound. It’s tough to pitch to someone as hot as Juan Soto, a 19 year old who just got called up from the majors, starting the year off in the South Atlantic League (Single A) and making it to the majors by May. Anyway, Anthony Santander and Corban Joseph are the only ones who produce RBIs, Santander’s off a ground out and Joseph’s off of a sacrifice fly out.

Game 4: 5/17/18: Bowie 5 Trenton 11

The Baysox did not get the deep start they had hoped for from Jayson Aquino in this matchup against the Trenton Thunder. He lasts just 2 innings and allowing 6 earned runs. The Baysox gathered 12 hits as a team but just couldn’t get the big hits. 4 out of the 5 runs from the offense were sacrifice outs which means there needs to be more hits as a team even though 12 hits is a large amount. Luis Ysla, Tanner Chleborad, and Michael Kelly also get a little bit of work.

Game 5: 5/18/18: Bowie 0 Trenton 2

A pitchers duel in Trenton with, Lucas Long going 6 innings of 1 run baseball. The Baysox offense struggled to hit the Thunder pitching, scratching only one hit across the board, Cedric Mullins had a single to the right fielder in the 6th inning. Mullins, Joseph, Santander, and Salecedo all had walks though. Austin Hays reaches on an error and steals a base, his 4th of the year.

Game 6: 5/19/18: Bowie 4 Trenton 9

Brian Gonzalez gets the promotion to the Baysox after starting the year off with a 3.18 ERA and a 2-2 record in Frederick. It did not go as planned for Gonzalez as he goes 2.2 innings, allowing 8 runs (6 earned) allowing 7 hits and 4 walks. The offense showed signs of life, out hitting the other team 9 to 8. Austin Hays and Cedric Mullins led the team with 2 hits each and Austin Hays with 2 RBIs. The defense allowed 2 costly unearned runs along with the pitching staff’s 5 walks.

Game 7: 5/20/18: Bowie 10 Trenton 5

The offense is back! The team gathers 14 hits and 10 runs, led by a big day from Cedric Mullins. He went 3-5 with 4 RBI (HR, 2B) Mountcastle and Rifaela also had notable performances each with three hits. Hunter Harvey went 4 innings, allowing 3 earned runs, and 6 strikeouts.

The player of the game is Cedric Mullins.

The Baysox did not get the best starts from their rotation this week but I think Aquino and Akin bounce back and Brian Gonzalez settles in. The offense seems to be hot, producing a lot of hits as a team. The defense has been making many errors the last few game and defense is vital to win games. The Baysox should be able to bounce back this week.
