Aki Basho: Day 11 results, insight, and current standings

Atamifuji puts distance between him and the leaders. Many old guard wrestlers facing demotion in the next tournament leading to speculation that their time in sumo may be over.

Fall like conditions were felt in Tokyo as the Aki Basho is into its final days. Atamifuji is putting on a show for the crowd and is currently on cruise control with a 9-1 mark and with some help today, he could put some more distance between him and the leaders.

Aoiyama and Hokuseiho was a battle of the giants to which Hokuseiho took the victory. 16 years younger and much potential on hand, Hokuseiho easily took down Aoiyama. Aoiyama told reporters that this maybe it for him and that he is not interested in trying to make his way back up to Division 1 Makuuchi in the case that he is demoted to Division 2 Juryo for November’s tournament. “Wrestlers will eventually have to hang it up, I feel like I am getting to that point. I don’t know how much longer my knees can take it,” said a dejected Aoiyama.

Speaking of the leader, Atamifuji defeated Tobizaru handily in a battle of wits to go to 10-1 and take a 2-win lead over the next closest competitor.
