Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Fall Short in Series Opener Against Charleston Dirty Birds
WALDORF, MD – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs suffered a 4-3 loss in the opening game of their six-game series against the Charleston Dirty Birds Tuesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium, leaving 10 runners on base and struggling to capitalize with runners in scoring position.
Crabs’ Offensive Struggles Continue Despite Ethan Wilson’s Home Run
The Blue Crabs entered Tuesday’s contest with a solid 5-5 record within the Atlantic League and 46-27 overall, aiming to extend their recent form. However, despite a bright moment from Ethan Wilson, who reached base four times and blasted his sixth home run to give Southern Maryland a 2-0 lead in the second inning, the team could not maintain the momentum.
After a scoreless first inning, Wilson’s two-run homer came following Phillip Sikes’s single and stolen base. Yet, the Blue Crabs’ offense faltered afterward, managing only two hits in eight attempts with runners in scoring position and being held scoreless over the game’s final four innings.
Charleston Dirty Birds’ Timely Hits Secure the Narrow Victory
The Dirty Birds responded promptly after falling behind, scoring three runs in the third inning. Charleston’s starter and winning pitcher David Lebron helped hold the line, while Javier Crespo ignited the comeback with a solo homer, followed by an RBI single by Narcisco Crook and an RBI triple from Carlos De La Cruz. Another run scored in the fourth inning on a wild pitch by Blue Crabs starter Ian Kahaloa, pushing the lead to 4-2.
Blue Crabs Attempt Late Rally But Fall One Run Short
Trailing by two runs in the fifth inning, Southern Maryland rallied to pull within one. Stephen Paolini singled and advanced on a fielding error, eventually scoring on an RBI single by Danny Bautista Jr., making it 4-3. Unfortunately, the team’s offense stalled afterward, failing to produce in the remaining innings.
Pitching Performances Shaped the Outcome
Starter Ian Kahaloa delivered a strong outing, pitching six innings and allowing only two earned runs on nine hits while striking out four. Despite his efforts, the lack of run support ultimately led to the loss, marking Kahaloa’s fourth defeat of the season.
Relievers Ethan Bates and Anthony Hoopii-Tuionetoa combined for three scoreless innings in relief of Kahaloa for Southern Maryland. For Charleston, Armando Vasquez and Henry Omana recorded holds, with Carlos Meza closing out the game for his second save of the season.

Many players have also transitioned from Southern Maryland to the Major Leagues, such as Isaac Mattson of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Maryland Sports Blog Take
The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs demonstrated glimpses of strong offensive capability early, particularly through Ethan Wilson’s home run, but the overall inability to convert opportunities with runners in scoring position was a critical factor in their one-run loss. Ian Kahaloa’s solid pitching effort was undermined by defensive miscues and the team’s limited offense after the second inning. Charleston capitalized efficiently on its chances, showcasing balanced hitting and clutch pitching.
Looking ahead, Southern Maryland will need to improve its situational hitting and limit mistakes defensively to turn the tide in this important Atlantic League series. With ample talent on the roster and an enthusiastic home crowd awaiting, the Blue Crabs have the ingredients to rebound strongly in the upcoming contests.
