#3 Maryland Suffers 2nd Non-Conference Loss, 1-0 To Coast Carolina

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – For a second consecutive game, the #3 Maryland Terrapins found itself on the short end of a 1-0 game.

Maryland (10-2-3) suffered it’s first loss of the season last Tuesday when Georgetown came to Ludwig Field and upset the Terps, 1-0.  They were not looking to do the same Friday night versus the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (7-6-0). Unfortunately, fate dealt the Terrapins another 1-0 stunning home loss.

In front of a crowd of 4,007, the Chanticleers came out of the gates running and aiming for the net.  Their first scoring attempt came in the sixth minute, when Senior F Frantzdy Pierrot had his shot saved by Terrapins Red-shirt Sophomore GK Dayne St. Clair.

In the 14th minute, St. Clair saved another Chanticleer shot, this one by Junior F Yazeed Matthews.

The Terrapins had their scoring chances as well.  Senior M/F George Campbell’s shot was saved by Chanticleers’ Senior GK Braulio Linares-Ortiz in the 15th minute.  Linares-Ortiz would save two more shots in the first half, Junior M Eryk Williamson’s shot in the 35th minute and Senior M Jake Rozhansky’s shot during the 41st minute.  Maryland would have no shots on goal in the second half.

Coastal Carolina out-shot Maryland six to four (out-shot Maryland 11-7 for the game) in the first half.  At the 37:06 mark, Chanticleers Junior M Ryan Willoughby passed the ball to Senior F Frantzdy Pierrot and Pierrot deposited the ball into the net for a 1-0 Coastal Carolina lead that would last the rest of the game.

Maryland did have three good scoring chances in the second half.  In the 54th minute, Junior F Sebastian Elney’s shot went high of net.

Senior M Martin Melchor had the final Coastal Carolina scoring opportunity during the 74th minute, but his shot went wide.

Substitute Terrapins Junior F Gordon Wild had the final chances for Maryland to tie the game up and send it into overtime.  Twice his foot controlled Maryland’s destiny but his shot in the beginning of the 79th minute sailed wide and the final shot of the game, in the 90th minute with 41 seconds left in the game, was blocked.

This will probably cost Maryland a spot in the top ten rankings, as they were the heavily-favorite team in both of their last two games.

With only two games left in the regular season before the B1G Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament is slated to get under away in November, Maryland will next face the VCU Rams (7-4) on Tuesday at Ludwig Field.  Game time is 7:00 PM. They finish the regular season at home against B1G Ten rival, the #23 Michigan Wolverines (8-4-2; 4-1-1 B1G Ten), Sunday, October 29th at 4:00 PM.
