2017 College Football Week 7: What We Learned

Here’s my attempt to analyze a crazy weekend on the college gridiron:

  1. EVERYONE is susceptible. This week was the wakeup call that a lot of college football teams needed, and a lot of fans were looking for. Four of the Top 10 teams in the nation went down this week (2 Clemson, 5 Washington, 8 Washington State, 10 Auburn), and it was a reminder that college football may just be one of the most chaotic sports in the world. Any given Saturday, right?
  2. The Pac-12 may have made out the worst of any conference. Both of the conference’s top two teams, Washington and Washington State, suffered tough losses that greatly jeopardized the conference’s chances of making it into the playoff. Currently, USC is the top ranked team in the conference in the AP Poll at 11. Naturally, the CFP Rankings at the end of the month will give us a more concrete idea, but the Pac-12 should be worried.
  3. Butch Jones’ tenure needs to come to an end. The Tennessee head coach has seen better days. This disappointing season faced another roadblock when the Volunteers couldn’t convert near the goal line at the end of the game to score the touchdown they desperately needed, falling to South Carolina. In fact, they failed to make it into the end zone the entire game. I’m not one to casually call for a coach’s head after a loss, but Jones has accumulated enough bad losses to be shown the door.
  4. NC State is impressive. I said it when they beat Louisville, and I’ll say it again now after their 35-17 road victory against Pitt: I like this Wolfpack squad. They started the season with a tough loss against South Carolina, but they’ve now won six in a row following that game, making themselves bowl eligible. This team jumped up to 16 in the AP Poll this week, and could be a sleeper for the playoff if they can find a way to win out in ACC play and against Notre Dame.
  5. Is LSU good? I’m legitimately asking because I have absolutely no clue. The team that got killed by Mississippi State and defeated at home by Troy has now won back-to-back games against ranked opponents (Florida and Auburn). This past win even landed them a spot in the AP Poll at 24. I don’t know if coach Ed Orgeron mixed something into their bayou water, but this LSU team looks like it may have turned its season around. We’ll see how long it lasts.
