Wizards Trade Hachimura to the Lakers for Kendrick Nunn and 3 Third-Round Picks

The Washington Wizards made their first big move of the season, trading Rui Hachimura to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Kendrick Nunn, a 2023 second-round pick via the Chicago Bulls, a 2029 Lakers second-round pick, and the less favorable 2028 second-round pick between the Wizards and Lakers. The less favorable pick means that Washington will get the better second-round pick out of the Wizards and Lakers based on where the respective teams finish that season.

Hachimura was the 9th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft and Nunn went undrafted in the 2018 NBA draft. However, Nunn was also the first ever undrafted rookie to win multiple Rookie of the Month awards.

Hachimura finished his playing time in a Wizards uniform (for the time being) by dropping 30 points in 30 minutes off the bench in a Wizards win over the Orlando Magic. The former Gonzaga forward was named the WCC Player of the Year in his final season in Spokane and has seen jumps in his points per game, assists per game, and rebounds per game while shooting around the same percentages as last season.

Rui didn’t seem too happy that he wasn’t starting for the Wizards, playing 30 games this season but not finding himself in the starting five at all. He was asked by a reporter if he asked for a trade and Rui replied, “no comment.” The fourth-year forward was asked a few other questions yesterday:

For the Wizards, Nunn missed all of last season due to a knee injury. This season he is shooting 8% worse from the field and 6% worse from deep in comparison to the 2020-21 season. He has also seen a dip in points per game, assists per game, rebounds per game, and steals per game. Nunn has also only started 2 games this season on a Lakers team that is 22-25, whereas in his rookie season, he started all 67 games he played.

The trade will definitely leave many Wizards fans in question but maybe the front office sees something that the fans don’t.
