Tigers Notch Semifinal Berth with Win Over Owls in Gulf Coast Showcase

The Towson Tigers (3-1) were victorious Monday evening in convincing fashion against the Florida Atlantic University Owls (2-2), with a score of 76-52. The Tigers now run their winning streak up to three games. This was the first game in Towson’s regular season Gulf Coast Showcase tournament.

Sophomore guard Zane Martin continued his growth as a leading contributor to the team, pouring in 23 points in 23 minutes played, going 4-7 from three point land. Martin has taken advantage of the starting role and has shown that he can single handedly take over a game. To top off his stat line, he notched two assists, a rebound, and a steal. The Tigers also had two other players in double figures: Sophomore forward Justin Gorham finished with 10 points in 21 minutes and Senior Guard/Forward Eddie Keith II ended up with 13 points.

In the second half, the Tigers were enjoying a 51-40 lead with 9:15 left to play. Martin hit a three pointer from the corner, which started a 25-8 scoring run to help the Tigers secure the win. This was Towson’s best overall three point shooting game, knocking down 9 threes.

Up Next: The Towson Tigers take on the University of Pennsylvania Quakers (3-2) tonight at 7:30 pm in the Semifinals of the Gulf Coast Showcase. Penn defeated Northern Illinois 93-80. This will be the first time the Tigers and Quakers have faced each other since 1996. According to the statistics, this game should be fairly close, but I see the Tigers having the edge with their dominant defense.
