Six Redskins players have salaries reduced for missing OTA’s

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Field Yates tweeted out that six players had their salaries reduced by certain amounts for missing Off-season Training Activities. As seen in the tweet, most of these players lost money in the six figures. Although the recent mini-camps were voluntary, these players had language included in their contract that reduced their salary if they did not attend or did not attend 90% of off-season workouts. The reduction, from Yates understanding, is a reduction of their base salary.

On Kevin Sheehan’s podcast on Wednesday, Yates stated that it was not entirely unusual for teams to incentivize off-season training programs. The Green Bay Packers, for instance, write bonuses into some contracts to encourage participation in off-season programs. According to Yates, very few teams have salary reduction clauses written into contracts regarding off-season programs, with the Texans and Cowboys being among those teams that do. Yates went on to state that he is not aware of any other players from any other teams that have lost salary due to missing voluntary OTA’s.
