Recap: Orioles Win Game One against Mets in Team-Work Fashion

In Game One of a two-game series hosting the New York Mets (50-67), the entire Baltimore Orioles (36-84) team showed up.

While Adam Jones was quite busy in his new home catching flies one after another, starting pitcher Andrew Cashner had a stellar night on the mound.

Offensively, things started to heat up in the fourth. Jonathan Villar struck out swinging, to bring up Renato Nunez. Nunez walked, and was advanced to third base when Adam Jones hit a double. Mark Trumbo brought in Nunez on a sacrifice fly.

The Orioles did not score again until the sixth, when Jones hit a solo homerun; his 13th of the season.

In the seventh, Chris Davis hit his 15th homerun of the season. Then Caleb Joseph walked, Cedric Mullins struck out, then Jonathan Villar walked. On a new pitcher, Nunez singled thanks to the ball deflecting off of Todd Frazier’s glove. Caleb Joseph was able to score from it, and Villar advanced to third. Inning ended with Jones flying out; Mets 2, Orioles 4.

Going into the top of the eighth, Cashner was pulled. His final line:
7 IP, 5 H, 2 R/2 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO, 1 WP, 105-66.

The fun did not stop there,  as in the 8th Trey Mancini started things off with a single. Due next was Tim Beckham who had a moonshot to left field; credited with a two-run home-run. At the end of the inning, Mets 2, Orioles 6.

Miguel Castro was put in to relieve Paul Fry (successful 8th inning), and it was a mistake. A run was scored (Mets 3, Orioles 6), and got a runner on from a wild throw to first. Mychal Givens was put in to save the game, and he did just that.

FINAL: Mets 3 – Orioles 6.
WP: Cashner. LP: Bobby Wahl. S: Givens

Fun fact: This is the 43rd game where Jones and Davis have both hit a homerun. It is the longest in MLB by active players. The next duo is Albert Pujols and Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels at 40 games.
