Recap: Nationals oust Phillies 7-4

Last night, the Washington Nationals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 7-4 on June 20th, 2019, at Nationals Park. Now, Washington holds a 36-38 record, inching closer to the .500 mark on the season, and they are moving into position for a wild card spot. The Phillies fell to 39-35 on the season, but still hold second place in the National League East Division.

On the mound, Nationals hurler Erick Fedde tossed 3 and two-thirds innings before getting pulled out of the contest, while surrendering five walks and giving up two earned runs. Overall, the 26-year old did not impress on the mound. As for Philadelphia, former National minor leaguer Nick Pivetta threw 5 and 1/3 innings while letting up six earned runs and walking three batters, which would then lead to a Washington victory.

To summarize, the Nationals opened the scoring by having outfielder Juan Soto double to left, which would score Anthony Rendon. Later in the bottom of the second, catcher Kurt Suzuki homered to left field to give Washington a two-run lead. Through the third and fourth innings, the Phillies would take a 3-2 lead from a pair of singles by Bryce Harper and Jay Bruce, along with a solo home run from Jean Segura. Then, it would be all Washington as the aforementioned Rendon would hit a home run followed by a three-run blast from Victor Robles which would ultimately give the Nationals a 7-4 win(Jay Bruce homered for the Phillies in the top of the seventh).

Now, the Nationals will begin a three game series against the Atlanta Braves, starting on June 21st, 2019. Washington will send RHP Stephen Strasburg(7-4, 3.75 ERA) to the mound for tonight’s contest. On the other hand, the Braves starting pitcher is yet to be determined.
