The Baltimore Ravens have had a history of great middle linebackers.  With Ray Lewis retired, the Ravens did not miss much of a beat with Daryl Smith stepping in in 2013 and providing leadership and great play.  Now the Ravens have added C.J. Mosley to the linebacking core and further strengthened the position.

The middle linebacking core should be a strength for the Ravens in 2014. They are young and talented and lead by a great leader in Smith.

Now onto the analysis.  Read more about Ravens position analysis: The middle linebackers

Bold predictions: Athletics will win AL West

File:Josh Donaldson 20130625.jpgNow that the trade deadline has come and gone we get to see what the final teams pretty much will look like.  Yes, trades can still happen if players make it through the waiver wire but the big names are likely off the market.  I predict that the Oakland Athletics will win the American League West with the LA Angels finishing second.  Now that the Baltimore Orioles have finished playing the Angels, Athletics and Mariners in a long stretch of games it is clear that the Athletics are the most complete team.   Read more about Bold predictions: Athletics will win AL West

Markakis hits career milestone

File:001U1843 Nick Markakis.jpgBaltimore Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis got his 1,500 career hit today and did one better by getting another hit.  Markakis is now halfway to 3,000 hits one of the big accomplishments for a major league hitter.

Markakis has been slowed by injuries the past couple seasons or he would have gotten to 1,500 sooner.  Still it is a big accomplishment for a player that is only 30.  Markakis if he stays healthy and has a long career has a very good shot at getting 3,000 hits.

Is it time to give Cruz some rest?

image

The Baltimore Orioles are winning because of great starting pitching and clutch at bats.  Early in the season Nelson Cruz provided a lot of those clutch hits.  Cruz has been in a slump since the All-Star break and his average has dipped below .265 which is well below what he has hit for most of the season.

Cruz carried the Orioles for the first quarter of the season until Adam Jones got hot.  Now Cruz has cooled off and it might be time to give him an off day.

Should the Orioles bring back Jim Johnson?

File:Jim Johnson.jpgNow that the Oakland Athletics have officially released Jim Johnson rumors have it that the Baltimore Orioles are interested in bringing him back.  Johnson has had a horrible season this year and he is now a free agent.  If the Orioles bring back Johnson it will likely be on a minor league deal and he would likely spend time in triple-A Norfolk.   A 7.14 era will not get Johnson a Major League contract anywhere.  For more on Johnson and his release read this storyRead more about Should the Orioles bring back Jim Johnson?

Player Profiles: Bud Norris

wpid-724px-bud_norris.jpgHave yourselves some Buds because it is Bud Norris player profile time.  The Baltimore Orioles acquired Bud Norris from the Houston Astros in 2012 before the trade deadline, so far it has been a good trade for the Orioles.  The Orioles did have to give up one of their top local prospects in Josh Hader for Norris and L.J. Hoes.  The Orioles traded for Norris because he still had years left on his contract and the Orioles were in need of some solid starting pitching. Norris while he may not be flashy is almost always solid.  Read more about Player Profiles: Bud Norris
