Navy Football Update

When we last left the Navy football team they lost 51-37 to SMU on Halloween night. Since that night they have had games against Tulsa and Memphis canceled due to a Covid outbreak at the academy. Reports have said as Navy would’ve been without as many as 30 players due to either positive tests or contact tracing. Football activities were paused from November 3rd through 11th. They had walk throughs on Thursday and Friday of last week. The first full practice since the SMU game is today.

The good news is the time off allowed he team to heal. Most of the injured players should be back for this week’s game at South Florida. It remains undecided who will start at quarterback this week. Senior Dalen Morris struggled against SMU while junior Tyger Goslin made the game appear closer than it was with a couple touchdown drives in the second half. This decision will affect the style of offense they run because Morris struggles with decision making in the triple option but is a better passer. Goslin can run the option but can’t throw it as well as Morris.

Bill Wagner of the Capital newspaper broke the news that the AAC is trying to makeup the Memphis game on November 28th and the Tulsa game on December 5th. Under this plan the Memphis-Tulane and Tulsa-Cincinnati games would move to December 12th. The AAC championship game is scheduled for December 19th. Tulane would have 23 days off between their game this Thursday and the their makeup game on 12/12. Navy would lose their bye week before Army/Navy which is a concern for the coaching staff.

The Navy/South Florida game is scheduled for 8pm Saturday night in Tampa. It will be on ESPNU.
