Conor McGregor, the retirement tweet heard around the world
Conor McGregor (21-4), the former UFC Featherweight and Lightweight Champion and one of the biggest draws in MMA, has decided to walk away from the sport that created his fame and made his fortune. Shocking the world by blasting a message to his 7.54 million Twitter followers around midnight, “The Notorious One” gave a proper good-bye in the tweet heard around the world.
“Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as “Mixed Martial Art” today.
I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition.
I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement.
Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!” Conor tweeted
UFC Lightweight Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, tweeted early this morning with an apparent response to the man he took the title from.
“There can be only one king in the jungle. Only ☝️,” Khabib’s tweet read along with a photo of himself and his title. Conor was expected to face Khabib in a rematch later this summer.
Adam Hill reported that he received a text from UFC President Dana White that read, “He has the money to retire and his whiskey is KILLIN it. It totally makes sense. If I was him, I would retire too. He’s retiring from fighting, not from working. The Whiksey will keep him busy and I’m sure he has other things he’s working on.” (I left the misspelled words to keep the quote true to form.)
WWE Superstar Finn Balor tweeted a response to Conor that simply read, “See you at ‘mania brother”. Could it be the prelude to McGregor making a jump to the WWE like shades of Ronda Rousey?
Twitter has been on fire with retweets and comments, giving people’s reactions and opinions. Conor once again has shocked the world, but it just did not happen the way we all expected. Only time will tell if Conor truly is calling it quits, but once he notifies the USADA and removes himself from mandatory drug tests, he will have to sit out at least 6 months per regulations. One thing is certain. Conor entertained us like no other and it is only proper that we give him a champion’s send off. I can envision Conor walking away with that patented McGregor strut.
