College Basketball Preview: UMBC (14-10, 6-3) at Maine (5-19, 3-6)

UMBC men’s basketball will take on the Maine Black Bears (5-19, 3-6) tomorrow afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The Retrievers (14-10, 6-3) are coming off a tough loss at home to the Harford Hawks on Wednesday evening, 70-61.  Junior guard K.J. Jackson led the team with 16 points and junior forward Arkel Lamar checked in with 13 points.  This, however, was not enough to overcome poor second-half shooting and a big night from Hartford senior guard J.R. Lynch.

Graduate student forward Sherburne leads UMBC in points per game, averaging 14.3 with Jackson chipping in 11.5.  Defense has been the calling card of the Retrievers all season, as they allow just 63.6 points per game against conference opponents.

Maine has had a tough season so far in conference, though they have won two of their last three. They are coming off a loss at Vermont on Wednesday, but defeated New Hampshire and UMass-Lowell in their previous two match-ups.

Redshirt junior guard Isaiah White (Centennial HS, Ellicott City) leads the Black Bears in scoring, coming in at 14 points per game.  Junior forward Andrew Fleming isn’t far behind, coming in at 13.8 ppg. As a team, though, Maine struggles on the offensive end of the floor, averaging just 63 points per game.

The Retrievers defeated the Black Bears, 61-52, on January 5th at the UMBC Event Center, in the conference opener for each team.

Tip –off tomorrow is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
