Orioles make a bunch of roster moves

The Baltimore Orioles have made a series of roster moves today before starting a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics.  The Orioles placed Miguel Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list and optioned Preston Guilmet to Triple-A Norfolk.   The Orioles recalled Evan Meek and and Tim Berry both are pitchers.

Here is the Orioles press release.

Orioles select the contract of Santana and place him on the DL

The Baltimore Orioles have selected the contract of Johan Santana and have played him on the 15-day DL.  The Orioles had until midnight tonight to decide what to do with Santana.  Santana had an opt out clause in his contract that the Orioles were worried about.

Santana has progressed greatly in his rehab and the Orioles will likely need his to be a starter.  Santana’s experience will likely add to the Orioles.

Here is the Orioles press release.

Orioles activate Davis, option Clevenger

The Baltimore Orioles have activated Chris Davis from Paternity Leave and optioned Steve Clevenger.   The Orioles had three catchers on the team and will keep Caleb Joseph as their backup.

There is no question that Clevenger is a better hitter than Joseph.  Joseph’s defense has been outstanding and despite not hitting well the Orioles.

Orioles recall Preston Guilmet

The Baltimore Orioles have announced that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Preston Guilmet from triple-A Norfolk. Guilmet is the corresponding move since they Orioles have optioned T.J. McFarland after last nights loss to the Houston Astros.

Guilmet has four saves for the Tides but carries a big 5.65 era.  Guilmet was acquired earlier this season from the Cleveland Indians.

Here is the Orioles press release.

Orioles option McFarland again

TJ McFarlandThe Baltimore Orioles have optioned T.J. McFarland to triple-A Norfolk today.  McFarland pitched three innings for the Orioles today and ate up a lot of innings while the rest of the bullpen rested.  McFarland has been optioned before and seems to be one of the Orioles swing players.  The Orioles have yet to make a corresponding move but will likely add another pitcher.

The Baltimore Orioles play the Tampa Bay Rays tonight in the second game of the three game series.  The Orioles won last night 5 to 3, for the recap of that game go here.  The Baltimore Orioles have selected the contract of catcher Caleb Joseph and he will be starting tonight.  Jamile Weeks has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.  The Orioles needed an extra catcher with Matt Wieters ailing from a forearm injury.  Wieters had test done and it looks like he will avoid the disabled list.

Joseph will start and will be making his Major League debut tonight.  I have enjoyed watching Joseph develop as a Minor League player and have been following him for years.  Joseph handles the bat well and has improved his defense, playing well at each stop.  Joseph also has a lot of power and has a good head on his shoulders.

Here is the Orioles lineup with Joseph batting ninth.  Bud Norris will be starting tonight for the Orioles.

Orioles option Meek recall Brach

The Baltimore Orioles have optioned pitcher Evan Meek to triple-A Norfolk and are going to recall pitcher Brad Brach from Norfolk. The Orioles taxed their bullpen yesterday while playing a double-header and need a fresh arm.

Meek started the season off pitching strong but lately he has struggled and his era has rose to 6.94, which is not good. Brach has not pitched that great in Norfolk but he will give the Orioles an extra arm. Brach has a 4.85 era while pitching in 12 games for the Tides.

Here is the Orioles press release on Meek.

Orioles lineup versus the Pirates game one (Lombardozzi optioned Machado activated)

479px-Manny_Machado_8-10-2012The Baltimore Orioles play the Pittsburgh Pirates in a double header today and the Orioles will have some roster moves coming.  Manny Machado will be activated today but will not start in the first game of the double header, Flaherty will start at third.  To make room for Machado the Orioles have optioned Steve Lombardozzi.  Lombardozzi has played extremely well with the Orioles this season batting .292.

Troy Patton is also likely to be activated today but it will have to wait until the first game is over.  Steve Pearce is also getting his second start with the Orioles today and Jamile Weeks is starting at second base.

Here is the Orioles lineup from Brittany Ghiroli.

Orioles sign Pearce

200px-Steve_Pearce_on_June_10,_2012The Baltimore Orioles have announced that they have signed Steve Pearce to a major league contract. Pearce was designed for assignment on April 22 to make room for T.J. McFarland.

With Chris Davis being out for some time with an injury the Orioles do not have a true backup first baseman.  Pearce can play first base and the outfield, though I do not think he plays either that well.  Bringing back Pearce is clearly a depth move.

Here is the Orioles press release.
