Capitals vs. Sabres: February 23, 2019

The Washington Capitals fell to the Sabres 5-2 in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon. Continuing their bad break in matinee games, the Caps are now 3-3 after a 12-day road trip.

At 34-21-7, the Capitals hold onto second in the Metro Division, not gaining any points on the Islanders. The Sabres have 66 points now and are just four points behind the Hurricanes and five behind the Penguins for the final Wild Card.

Carl Hagelin in his Capitals debut scored no points, but earned several big hits. He was sent to the penalty box for a nasty injury to Jeff Skinner. The only two goals for the Caps came from Alex Ovechkin in the second period and Andre Burokovsky in the third. This extends Ovechkin’s scoring streak to five games and his season total to a league-leading 43 goals. Meanwhile, Sam Reinhart earned a hat trick for the Sabres, including an empty net goal to seal their victory.

On the bright side, the Capitals do claim the season series 2-1. Headed home, they prepare to face the Rangers for the first time since Thanksgiving.
