Elon Uses Strong Defensive Performance to Stymie Tigers on the Road

Full disclosure this was an ugly game all around. Towson drops this first of 2 straight home games with a 17-3 defeat at the hands of the Phoenix. The Tigers did not get on the board until the 4th quarter. The main factor in the win for Elon was their running game. They combined for 247 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.

Quarterbacks Andrew Indorf and Landen Clark combined for 35/57 for 438 yards and 2 INT’s. Towson struggled on the ground just gaining 64 yards on 23 attempts. That needs to be better going forward in order for the Tigers to be successful. Jimmyll Williams ran for 90 yards on 14 attempts. TJ Thomas and Dan Fredrick both found the endzone for Elon.

Williams led Elon in receiving yards with 2 catches for 60 yards. John Dumore had a big day with 8 catches for 104 yards but didn’t find the endzone. The offensive struggles have hurt the Tigers at times, but for Indorf, it’s how he will get better and grow as a player.

Elon defensively didn’t do anything necessarily special, but they shut down the Tigers offense. Tony Hart led them in tackles with 8. They got a sack from Jevean Brown and an INT from Asher Cunningham. Towson struggled with getting pressure on Landen Clark as they had zero sacks on the day. CJ McClendon had 9 total tackles and Jasin Shiggs grabbed an INT.

The Tigers have to put this one behind them as they get ready to celebrate their homecoming. Monmouth comes to town riding high with a 4-1 record with their last 2 wins over Villanova and Delaware State.

Derek Robinson is the man under center for Monmouth. A graduate transfer from Maine, he’s lit up scoreboards this year and throw no fewer than 4 touchdowns a game. He’a thrown for 22 passing touchdowns and 2028 yards passing on the season. He has just 5 INT’s on the season, with 4 in their first game. He’s gone 3 straight games without an INT.

The Tigers defense will have its hands full with Josh Derry (a Towson native) who has 8 touchdowns on the season, TJ Speigth. Gavin Nelson and Tra Neal, who have all had success finding the endzone. They will also need to slow up Rodney Nelson, who has 721 yards rushing and has found the endzone 6 times on the year.

In order for Towson’s passing game to get going they will need to keep an eye on Jaeden Jones and Duce Lee who will make Indorf life difficult. Ryan Russo and Spencer Kisbaugh will also look to make a big impact on the game.

Towson needs to find a way to get this win and go into the bye week with some momentum. The defense has to step up and find a way to make Robinson uncomfortable and force him to make mistakes. If not it will be a very long day for Towson.

Kickoff from Unitas Stadium is set for 2pm.

GOH Tigers!!!
