Capitals Rebound with 3-1 Victory Over Flyers

Following a sluggish start, the Capitals began to fly around late in the second. Strong goalie play and an aggressive offensive swing late in the second period led to the Capitals victory.

Coming into the game, the Capitals had lost their previous four against the Flyers and were looking to end that streak. Halfway through the first period, Joel Farabee got the Flyers on the board first. The Capitals did not have much to say through the first and most of the second. However, they did respond with two late goals in the second by Alex Ovechkin and Dmitry Orlov.

Ovechkin’s goal marked his eighth goal on the year and his 714th of his career. He is now just three goals shy of tying Phil Esposito for sixth-most in NHL history. Orlov’s goal was his second of the year, and was the eighth time this season the Caps scored a goal in the final minute of a period.

After the two goals by Ovechkin and Orlov, the Capitals carried that momentum in the third. Nick Jensen added another tally in the third, his first goal as a member of the Capitals. Ilya Samsonov provided an outstanding effort in goal for the Capitals as well. He saved 36 shots from the Flyers, the second-most saves he’s made in a game in his career.

Following the loss to the Bruins on Friday, the Capitals proved worthy in their response against the Flyers. They ended their four game skid against them and have now won five of their last six. On their five-game road trip, the Capitals went 4-1-0 and are now 14-6-4 on the year.

The Capitals match up next with the Devils at home on Tuesday (3/9) looking to continue their better play.
