The Best Thing About Washington’s Win Over the Steelers

Washington’s 23-17 comeback win over the previously unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers was without a doubt the most exciting moment of the 2020 season so far. Now at 5-7, the win keeps the Football Team squarely in the thick of the race for the NFC East, and for a team that has already been trending in the right direction the second half of the year, the way that the they won is extremely encouraging.

The lack of consistent playmakers in the passing game aside from WR Terry McLaurin has been a theme all season, and there’s no doubt that it has hurt Washington’s offense this year.

Against the Steelers, Washington did not have that problem.

In relief of the injured Antonio Gibson, running back JD McKissic led all players with 10 catches and was third on the team with 70 yards through the air. Particularly in the second half, he functioned as a consistent safety valve for Alex Smith and kept Washington ahead of the chains as they made the comeback.

Tight end Logan Thomas and Wide receiver Cam Sims have flashed throughout the season, but against Pittsburgh the two players were legitimate difference-makers.

Thomas caught key first downs and the game-tying touchdown in the third quarter en-route to a team-leading nine catches for 98 yards. Sims second on the team with 92 yards on his five catches, one of which was a spectacular 29-yard one-handed grab that put Washington in scoring range on the go-ahead drive.

On a night where McLaurin had only 14 yards on two receptions, Washington’s other receivers stepped up in a big way against a quality opponent. The second-year player won’t have many games like this one statistically, but it’s an encouraging development for the Football Team to see other players take advantage of their matchups when McLaurin gets extra defensive attention.

With a full complement of offensive weapons and Alex Smith steadying the offense since coming into the lineup at quarterback, Washington’s offense could be rising to meet the production the team is getting from its’ defense. As a more complete team, Washington could be even more of a threat in the playoffs if they can make a final push and win the NFC East.
