D.C. United gets payback at Columbus: Win 1-0

Last season, D.C. United had been all about winning at home. So far in the early going in 2019, that narrative looks to be the opposite. The Black and Red feel right at home on the road, and that continued Wednesday night with a 1-0 win at Columbus over the Crew. That is the very team that elimated them in the knockout round of the MLS playoffs. D.C. United’s road record improves to 3-0-1, while last season they were 1-9-7 away from D.C.

D.C. United’s lone goal came off the foot of Wayne Rooney in the 27th minute on a free kick. Rooney has five goals this season.

Other than Rooney’s goal, it was a busy night for both goalies. The Crew outshot D.C. United 17-16. D.C. United had the slight edge on target 6-5. D.C. United goalie, Bill Hamid, made four saves to record his fifth shutout of the 2019 season, which leads the MLS.

The Black and Red have improved their record to 5-2-2 with 17 points to remain ahead of the pack in first place of the Eastern Conference. They will continue their two-game road trip on Sunday afternoon against Minnesota United FC. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. on FS1.
