Yankees designate Brian Roberts for assignment
The New York Yankees have designated former Baltimore Oriole Brian Roberts for assignment today. Roberts who has struggled to stay healthy in his career actually stayed healthy for the Yankees but was very unproductive.
Roberts hit only .237 with five home runs for the Yankees who had signed him to be their starting second baseman. Roberts was supposed to bring a veteran bat to the Yankees.
Roberts has shown to have very little left in the tank the past few seasons and I doubt the Orioles will look for a reunion. At best I would not be totally surprised if the Orioles brought Roberts back on a minor league deal to add depth at triple-A Norfolk.
The Orioles still have Steve Lombardozzi at Norfolk but Roberts would not be a bad fit down there. Roberts knows the organization and will be a good team player. Roberts would be a good fit as a player-coach in Norfolk.
