Wieters done for season, needs Tommy John surgery
The Baltimore Orioles will have to go the rest of the season without their starting catcher Matt Wieters. Wieters saw doctor James Andrews today and had an MRI on his elbow and it has been determined that he will need Tommy John surgery. Wieters who is known for his strong throwing arm that has won him a Gold Glove will have the surgery tomorrow in Atlanta.
Wieters is a huge loss for the Orioles and has been one of their missing pieces. Wieters hit .308 with five homers and five doubles before going on the disabled list. The other catchers Caleb Joseph, Steve Clevenger (now at Triple-A) and Nick Hundley have all struggled at the plate.
The Orioles now hope that Wieters will be ready for the start of next season. Tommy John surgery takes a long nine months to recover from but Wieters may recover faster because he is not a pitcher.
