Who’s Next? With The Champ On The Mend, Who Knows?

Daniel “DC” Cormier delivered the final blows to Stipe Mocic at 4:33 in the first round of UFC 226 to win the coveted UFC heavyweight title. This was the fight that many fight fans thought would cause ‘DC” the most problems. This is also a fight Stipe wants back. Cormier is on the mend with a back injury suffered in his title defense against Derrick Lewis, leaving fight fans and fighters hanging in limbo.

UFC fighter rankings should be able to offer the quick answer right? Not so fast my friends. MSB Sports just told you about DC’s last two fights. Mocic was ranked number 1 in the world and Lewis was ranked number 2 both fell victim to the champ. Curtis Blaydes is ranked number 4 in the world and has been asking for a title fight. Unfortunately Blaydes ran into number 3 ranked Francis Ngannou back in November and got knocked out in 45 seconds. Ngannou followed that performance with a don’t blink 26 second KO of heavyweight legend Cain Velasquez at UFC Phoenix. That takes us to the obvious answer right? Francis Ngannou

Daniel Cormier vs. Francis Ngannou for the UFC heavyweight title. Clearly that’s the next fight right? UFC President Dana White say’s wrong. White has acknowledged Ngannou’s current win streak and two huge KO’s in his last two fights. However White has also said UFC has a fight in the works for Cormier but it’s not Ngannou. Now we have to ask ourselves which direction we think White will lead DC into. Apparently the road to the heavyweight title has many forks. Does the UFC go with a rematch against Stipe? Fight fans might enjoy seeing that again and Mocic wants it badly. Former UFC heavyweight champion (current WWE universal champion) Brock Lesnar rejoined USADA in July and might be lured into a shot at another title. Alexander Volkov, Alistair Overeem and Junior Dos Santos ranked 5-7 respectively all want a shot at greatness. Jon “Bones” Jones the UFC light heavyweight champion would love to move up and fight DC for a second title.. However “Bones” has his hands full with number 3 ranked Anthony Smith for the light heavyweight title at UFC 235.

This winding road to the UFC heavyweight title has some treacherous turns and steep grades. There are many ways to get there, some more dangerous than others. For now we wait while Cormier mends and while Dana teases us with the what if scenarios that are running rampant across the heavyweight locker rooms.
