Wayne Rooney is leaving D.C. United after season

Wayne Rooney’s reign in the nation’s capital will come to a close at the end of the season.
The star forward will leave D.C. United and head back to England. He’ll become a player and assistant coach for Derby County, a second-tier English club. Terms of this contract were not disclosed. This news was first reported by Steven Goff of The Washington Post.

The contract Rooney signed least year worth a team-record $3.5 million in base salary was supposed to last three years and run through the end of next season. Instead D.C. will clear Rooney’s salary off their books and won’t received a transfer fee from Derby.

Rooney will turn 34 this October and will remain with the Black and Red for the final nine regular season games as well as the playoffs should D.C. United make it.
