Washington Spirit fall to Chicago Red Stars 1-0

D.C. United and the LA Galaxy wasn’t the only soccer match that happened in the District over the weekend. On Saturday night fans packed Maryland SoccerPlex to see the Washington Spirit take on the Chicago Red Stars. Four women’s World Cup players were in the starting lineup including Team USA’s own Rose Lavelle.

The Red Stars narrowly edged the Spirit 1-0 in front of a packed crowd of 5,300 fans. Despite this, the Spirit played a great defensive effort they can build on. The first half was scoreless thanks in large part to a huge sliding block by Spirit defender Sam Staab in the sixth minute from a shot by Chicago forward Arin Wright.

Wright was robbed once again in the 26th minute with a save from goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe.

Yuki Nagasato broke through in the 65th minute to give Chicago the 1-0 lead which would turn out to be the final. The Spirit will be back in action this Saturday on the road against Portland Thorns FC. Kickoff is at 10:30 p.m.
