Washington Spirit fall 3-1 to Portland Thorns FC

The Washington Spirit fought hard but came up short in a 3-1 defeat to Portland Thorns FC on the road in front of over 20,000 spectators. Despite producin plenty of chances including having 59% possession and 15 shots, the Spirit were only able to get one goal through. 10 of those 15 shots came in the second half.

The Thorns scored twice in the first half from Hayley Raso and Emily Sonnett in the 5th and 18th minute, respectively. Christine Sinclair added to their lead in the 63rd minute before Andi Sullivan put the Spirit on the board with a shot top shelf in the 68th minute thanks to an assist from Rose Lavelle.

The Spirit will return home for two matches this week. First up is a Wednesday night tilt with the Utah Royals FC at the Maryland SoccerPlex and the Orlando Pride on Saturday night at Audi Field. Both matches will kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
