Washington Spirit earn three points on road, shutout Sky Blue 1-0

The Washington Spirit bounced back from Saturday night’s 2-1 loss to the Houston Dash with a big 1-0 road win over Sky Blue FC in Piscataway, New Jersey. Rose Lavelle, the USWNT hero who won the Bronze Ball, returned to the lineup.

The lone goal that would decide this game came in the 54th minute. Ashley Hatch broke from the defense and followed down a pass from midfield. Hatch finished the breakway going bottom-shelf in the right corner.

Despite the close score, the Sprit dominated offensively outshooting Sky Blue 17-4, controlling possession for 63.7$ of the match and an 82%-67% edge in passing accuracy.

The win improves the Spirit’s record to 6-3-4 with 21 points, good for third place and just a point behind the second-place North Carolina Courage, whom the Spirit will see next. That game will take place on August 2 at Sahlen’s Stadium in North Carolina with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
